There’s an interesting story that emerged in New Jersey about a hotheaded teacher who regularly screams at students who refuse to stand for the national anthem and sometimes pulls there chairs out. One of the students in the class caught the teacher in action on videotape, and it’s been circulating online. The student who taped the incident was allegedly suspended from school for 10 days, with no punishment for the teacher.
Hi,
I watched the video and I thought about what lead to this incident. My feeling is that this student believes that he has not been listened to. The student has not been taught how to advocate for himself (parents and school need to teach character). Obviously this is a situation that has not been dealt with for a long time, I can tell by the emotion in the teacher’s voice. I think the administration needs to get connected to the school and begin a school plan to develop relationships with students and work with students who feel alienated. My question now is, what has the school done about the incident since? Have they just handed out punishment or have they put in a plan to look at their school climate, reabilitate this classroom and teacher, work with students to discuss how they can have a voice, developed a dispute resolution policy. This is not about video phones in the classroom, it is about a caring and respectful school environment that values people. That will tell me what kind of school this is.
